Xuanwu 1km2
International design camp of SEU Campus surrounding innovative city
Urbanization is a complex process of human society, showing the different process- es and characteristics in different regions of the world. However, it changes the ur- ban-rural relationship, population structure and landscape on different scales. In view of this, Southeast University in China,MIT in U.S. and the CEPT University in India jointly proposed to conduct a comparative study of the spatial structure, evolu- tion and strategies by selecting a 1km2 sample from the world’s representative cities.
Xuanwu District of Nanjing is an urban area with the unique identity of Mountain, Water, City and Forest combined. It also has the best innovation capacity and cultur- al atmosphere in the city. The advantages of innovative resources and platform, to- gether with its rich cultural heritage make Xuanwu to be the core area of Nanjing, the beautiful ancient capital.
The surrounding area of the Southeast University (formerly the Central University Campus) reflects the continuous historical structure, mixed functions and compact texture from the Six Dynasties ancient Palace to the contemporary high-density city. It has a profound historical heritage and a long-lasting city memory. In the face of the raging wave of social and economic restructuring, the region is also faced with the arduous task of improving space quality, upgrading industrial functions, integrat- ing multiple resources, and building innovative urban areas.
In this context, this design camp selects the typical old or idle facilities with different functions within the scope of about 1km2 around the campus of Southeast Universi- ty, and carries out the whole process of renewal design from resource survey, func- tion program to space design and environmental creation. From a multi-disciplinary perspective, we will respond to multi-level urban issues with diverse outcomes. Under the realistic background of China’s economic development, this activity aims to make a meaningful exploration on the path and method of the urban transformation.
The design camp will invite about 150 students from famous architecture institutions worldwide, 15-20 well-known professors and professionals to participate in architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape architecture and other related disciplines. The results will be various, such as renewal plans, policy recommendations or related research reports. After the design camp is over, the outcomes will open to the public. Open presentation and exhibition will be held at the same time.
The design camp is planned to be held continuously every summer, providing positive assistance and useful suggestions for the promotion of Nanjing’s urban regeneration in Xuanwu District.
